The Sorry Thanks I Love You Café
Our newly-opened flagship has been described “a big, boujee playground for adults” (Concrete Playground), “unlike anything else in Sydney” and, quite simply, “extraordinary.” (Broadsheet Sydney)
Located in the basement at Westfield Sydney, our space includes Sorry Thanks I Love You’s first ever hospitality concept: a tiny, sleek oasis of a café serving up specialty coffee and a handful of perfect treats from Clovelly’s cult custard tart purveyor Tuga and Byron Bay’s superfood vegan chocolatier Loco Love.
From construction to menu, our first ever hospitality concept has been conceived along the same curatorial principles applied to the rest of our range: with a focus on excellence and simplicity.
While the Sorry Thanks I Love You store hosts the newest collections from Comme Des Garçons, Issey Miyake, Marni, and a stable of up-and-coming and local makers like Momoko Hatano and Dinosaur Designs, entertainment at the adjoining café includes a library of rare and vintage fashion, art and architecture titles, small-run magazines from independent global publishers, and games by local artists Ken Done and Kim Siew Gogan.
The Architecture: An Eight Thousand Piece Sculpture Built By Night
Our store and café is housed within a space that feels more like a sculpture than a store. Every piece of the eight-thousand-piece interwoven timber space designed by Han Lim from StudioMKZ was painstakingly hand assembled by night over four months by Archiway’s Scott Sun and his team.
The sleek, 30 metre-long crescent of communal, tiered seating in the café has been specifically designed to also accommodate a mashed up event program including natural wine tastings with P&V Wine + Liquor, coffee cuppings with Single O, and cheese tastings with Bruny Island Cheese’s Nick Haddow, all against a soundscape powered by French luxury audio specialists Devialet.
The Autumn Menu: Double Digit Single Origin Coffees
We’re working with the country’s leading single origin and specialty coffee experts for this project: Single O – a company famously picky about the operators with whom it will partner. We’re the only one of these partners to be offering every all 10 of Single O’s single origin coffees on their menu.
“Single O stands for specialty coffee and we’re selective about who we work with because it goes back to doing right by the people who planted the seeds at the start of this journey,” says Single O’s Frankie Muir.
“When you look at our bags of coffee the first thing you’ll notice is the name of the farmer who made it. When it comes to making coffee of this quality, the farmers are selective about which cherries they pick - so we’re just as selective about choosing partners who will do that coffee justice and showcase its quality. That’s why we’re working with Sorry Thanks I Love You.”
The kaleidoscope of washed and unwashed coffees on the menu range from $4 to a baller $10 and are sourced from small-lot farmers and painstaking producers from all over the world - from Honduras to Ethiopia. Many of these producers take a fine wine-making approach to their craft, borrowing both terminology and techniques from cognac production and viticulture, which translates to cupping scores range from 80 to an almost unheard of 96. All of this means that visitors to our café can try a different, best-in-class cup whenever they visit.
We’re not interested in being another CBD café churning out coffee and oversized cookies. Sorry Thanks I Love You is about offering the people the opportunity to try some of the world’s best in a particular category – whether that’s a sweater made from the softest cashmere in the world, or a coffee that stops the Q Graders in their tracks.
Our expansive single origin menu has just launched, with more projects in the works for later in the season.
