Made by hand in Japan over the course of several months, Hender Scheme’s ‘Hommage’ collection consists of leather tributes to the classic silhouettes of the world’s most iconic sneakers. “It’s an expression of the idea that you can take something that’s mass produced, and turn it into something completely different,” Hender Scheme founder Ryo Kashiwazaki has said. The underlying idea is that Hender Scheme sneakers last forever, perhaps unlike their canvas and plastic counterparts. Championed by the likes of High Snobeity, HypeBeast, Monocle, and Vogue, Hender Scheme now has a cult following of dedicated sneaker heads around the world, and outside of Japan these shoes are notoriously hard to come by.
A psychology major-turned-cobbler, Ryo Kashiwazaki is an artisan leather craftsman with a cult-like following around the globe. With his team of 13 artisans across Tokyo and Kobe, Ryo balances human hands with machines to recreate some of the most iconic sneakers of our time.
