Madame T
The baffling simplicity and versatility of Issey Miyake’s “Madame T” stole has made it one of the most enduring creations in the Pleats Please stable. This extra long pleated stole with its central hole can be wrapped, twisted, draped and pinned in all manner of variations to create a plethora of one piece garments including dresses, tops, skirts, turbans and kimonos. It’s all very arthouse and tremendously satisfying. Issey Miyake’s humble ambition to make practical, washable, lightweight crease-free clothing has driven him to create some of the world’s most extraordinary creations. Pleats are added to these garments after they have taken shape via a secret heat application technique. Ageless, genderless, and trans-seasonal, these garments are wrinkle-proof, machine-washable, and travel-friendly. There’s a reason he’s called the grandfather of modern design.
Issey Miyake
The grandfather of modern design, progressive Japanese designer Issey Miyake had an infamous preoccupation with geometry and technology. Issey Miyake is hailed by artists, designers and fashion houses as one of the most influential creatives of the century, and was perhaps most famous for his eponymous boutique perfume line and lightweight, un-creasable clothing line, ‘Pleats Please’. He was also the man behind Steve Jobs’ black turtlenecks, the Lithuanian Olympic uniform in 1992, and the founder of his own design museum in Tokyo.
