In Bed With Kelly Elkin

Kelly Elkin is many things: the daughter of a pair of park rangers from Queensland, a sustainable manufacturing ambassador, a lemon meringue pie expert, and one half of ALAS.

An acronym for All Light All Shadow, ALAS is a Sydney-based ethical label that blurs the line between sleepwear and activewear.  Five years in the making, the ALAS team consists of Kelly, her best friend Betony Dircks, assistant Mimi, and a team of makers in India.

Betony and Kelly design all their own prints (they graduated together with a Bachelor of Fashion Design from QUT) and their label is fair trade.  More impressive still, the pair know exactly how their products are made, from seed to cloth - and who makes them.

“We have travelled all over India to find the best producers and the highest quality organic cotton sateen,” explains Kelly. “The yarn for our knits is bought from a local organic cotton farm and it is then spun, knitted, dyed and printed in local Tirrupur workshops using GOTS certified techniques.”  ALAS’ producers then cut, sew quality control and pack the collection and send it to Australia.

Their newest, colour-blocked collection is inspired by travels to New Zealand and Greece, the optical illusions of Bridget Riley and Brett Whiteley’s love of primary colours.

“We love to play on traditional shapes and styles by injecting a lot of colour and print,” Kelly says.

We figured that someone whose specialty is sleepwear would know a thing or two about bed time rituals.  So to celebrate the release of ALAS’ new collection, Kelly takes us in to her bedroom, right before bed.

On my bedside table is… A Monstera, tea cup and about four partially read books!

My sheets are…linen.

My nightcap was…ALAS x Wild Love Sleepy Time Tea.

I’m wearing…ALAS of course!

I’m reading…I always have two on the go. The Course of Love by Alain de Botton and Nicotine by Nell Zink.

I’m hoping to dream about…. my next holiday.

And not about… the horror movie my flat mate watches!

I’ve set my alarm for… 6.20am

The last thing you do before I turn out the light is…open my door slightly for my cat to come in! She is quite persistent and will bang on the door if I don’t!
