Deer Leather Bag - 1803

Nose to tail

Make No Mistake

There are only a handful of people left in the country with the skills to produce something of this calibre, which is why Penny Hansen had to call on three expert craftsmen from remote parts of Australia to create it.  First there’s the small batch tanner on the Fleurieu Penninsular, Tony Scott, who transforms the Hansens’ red deer hides into buttery soft leather in inky blues, warm creams and rusty browns.  Then there’s then philosophical craftsman in the Yarra Ranges, Jarren Borgher, who creates each bag’s robust structure by painstakingly sewing each piece of leather together like a puzzle.  And finally, there’s the artist, designer, and screen printer in the Blue Mountains, Julie Paterson, who makes the bag’s perfect linen lining from scratch.
