Vorgeschmack – Martin & Anna Arndorfer

Chosen by Master Sommelier Sebastian Crowther

Tschüss

‘Vorgeschmack’ literally translates as ‘appetiser’ – but to say that this Austrian white wine is tasty as a snack would be doing it a grave injustice.  It’s a 80/20 mix of the Kamptal valley’s two signatures: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from vineyards around the village of Strass, on the banks on the Danube.  It’s light, floral and easy to pair, and has been chosen for us by Master Sommelier Sebastian Crowther who is one of only three Australians to have qualified for this prestigious title. The winner of the Judy Hirst award for creating Australia’s wine list of the year, Sebastian is now Head Sommelier at Sydney’s Rockpool and has worked and travelled extensively throughout Europe – including to Strass. This wine is his pick of the region and it was only by chance that he managed to bring a few cases home with him.  (Chancier still that he decided to share some with us.)

While funky, well-groomed Austrian Martin and Anna Arndorfer both exemplify ‘young hip small batch winemaker’, they also come from two of Austria’s most respected wine families in a region that has specialized in these varieties for generations.
