2011 Cabernet Merlot - Crawford River

Chosen by Master Sommelier Sebastian Crowther

Trail blazers

Every wine nerd knows that because Aussie Rieslings are typically bypassed by punters for overpriced Sauvignon Blancs, some of Australia’s best white wine makers are relatively unknown by the masses. What they don’t know is that one such Riesling maker in Victoria, Crawford River, also quietly grows some cabernet franc and merlot and is now making some of the country’s most underrated Cabernet Merlot.  The smooth, rich 2011 vintage is one of Master Sommelier Sebastian Crowther’s favourites.  The winner of the Judy Hirst award for creating Australia’s wine list of the year, Sebastian currently holds the coveted position of Head Sommelier at Sydney’s Rockpool.  His focus for Sorry Thanks I Love You is on sourcing new and emerging small artisanal producers from around the world – including our own backyard.

Crawford River

Crawford River was settled in 1884 and unless John and Catherine Thomson planted a few vines back in 1975, the property may well have continued to quietly thrive as a fourth generation sheep and cattle station on the edge of the Western District. Thanks to John’s chance meeting with famed winemaker Stuart Anderson and his experimentation in a makeshift distillery in the shearers quarters almost 40 years ago, Henty is now one of the most well respected wine regions in Victoria. John’s viticulturist daughter Belinda joined the ranks after several years working vintages in Spain and honing her craft in New Zealand, Italy and Germany.
